In 99 River Street, former boxer, now a professional cab driver Ernie Driscoll, becomes a prime suspect in the murder of his wife, who was having an affair with the sleazy jewel thief Rawlins. In his quest to discover the real killer, Ernie is assisted by aspiring actress Linda, who gets more than one opportunity to use her acting talents. 99 River Street is a film about unfulfilled dreams. Ernie has always aspired to become a boxing champion, but never achieved the title. It is only in his final confrontation with Rawlins in the New York docks, when the soundtrack echoes with the bustle of the boxing ring, that he gets his chance to prove himself. Although filmed in Los Angeles, the film is set in New York, a city where danger lurks around every corner and nothing is what it first seems. The filmmakers manage to convey this uncertainty through a series of narrative deceptions and clever manipulation of plot information.
