Kansas City Confidential was inspired by an attempted “perfect crime” from Kansas City police records. After his release from prison, an ex-convict Joe makes his living as a professional driver. One day he becomes a suspect in a bank robbery after the real robbers use his car as bait. When the police release him for lack of evidence, Joe decides to track down the robbers himself and clear his name. But it won’t be easy: the robbery was masterminded by the cunning Tim Foster, a former police officer who had planned everything so that the robbers would not know each other: during the robbery, they wore masks not only for the sake of anonymity from the outside world, but also from each other. The film is a great example of Karlson’s effective style, presenting a complicated plot full of twists and turns in a direct way. There are also the trademarks of frequent close-ups and brilliantly shot and edited fights.
