No Country for Old Men 🇺🇸 (Tahle země není pro starý )

After three years, when we presented four neo-noirs directed by Joel and Ethan Coen in the program section entitled „Noir Pranksters“, we are returning to their joint work. The Oscar Award for Direction-winning adaptation of American writer Cormac McCarty’s novel of the same name puts sociopathic hitman Anton Chigurh (with a poker face and Javier Bardem’s joker’s grin) on the trail of a Vietnam veteran and his stolen briefcase containing two million dollars belonging to drug smugglers. The mess they and another interested bounty hunter leave behind is cleaned up by the aging Texas sheriff who narrates the story. Aside from the audience-appealing characters and the retro atmosphere of the early 1980s, the film’s charm lies in its masterful storytelling, which benefits from unpredictability and moments of surprise.
