Wim Wenders‘ Palme d’Or-winning Cannes road movie, based on a screenplay by American playwright Sam Shepard, vividly reflects the director’s fascination with the multilayered American landscape and culture. In collaboration with cinematographer Roby Müller, they capture the vastness of the arid deserts of the American South, the concrete jungle of anonymous cities through which the tangled web of heated highways winds, the omnipresent roaring engines of planes and automobiles associated with the „life packed in a suitcase“ style, and the endless roads dotted with cheap motels and always-ready fast food joints. Wenders views America as a world in which it is easy to get lost. As it is for the film’s protagonist, a noirish misfit who, with the burden of a mystery-shrouded past, struggles to find his way back to his estranged family. The symbolism of the colours red and green, as Müller works with them, is like no other in any film.
