During a bank robbery, $210,000 is stolen and a police officer is killed. The two perpetrators, one of whom is the notorious criminal Wheeler, manage to escape. Wheeler’s girlfriend Lona soon comes to the attention of the LAPD as she waits patiently in her apartment for the dangerous but charismatic robber to contact her. But police detective Paul Sheridan, assigned to the case, falls in love with the pretty girl and, under her influence, plans to break the law and take the stolen money himself. The casting of Fred MacMurray and the conception of the central character recall Double Indemnity, and while Pushover doesn’t reach the qualities of Wilder’s masterpiece, it still has plenty to offer in terms of sheer entertainment. The script, while by no means groundbreaking, is tight and gripping and everything in it has its place and purpose. The cast is also an attraction, with Kim Novak appearing in her first major role.
