The Fallen Sparrow is a rather poetic title of a spy noir based on the novel by Dorothy B. Hughes, otherwise also the author of Ride the Pink Horse and In a Lonely Place. John Garfield plays a Spanish Civil War veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome after months of imprisonment and torture. Among other things, he is accompanied everywhere by the sound of shuffling feet belonging to one of his captors. On his return from the sanatorium, he is dealt another blow by the mysterious death of a close friend, which he tries to investigate. Garfield succeeds very well in capturing the state of a mentally disturbed man who, due to trauma and paranoia, is unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy. The atmosphere is also evocative, which is certainly a credit to cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca, who uses some of the techniques he would later apply in films such as The Locket (1946) and Out of the Past (1947).
