The Scarf directed by German-born E. A. Dupont belongs to a loose series of film noirs where the motif of amnesia plays a prominent role. The protagonist is a young man who escapes from a mental institution where he was locked up as the alleged perpetrator of his girlfriend’s brutal murder. During his escape, he finds his way, of all places, to a turkey farm (!), where its peculiar, philosophizing owner hides him from the police. Another important figure in the story is a waitress who makes a chance acquaintance with the fugitive. The film was shot by the experienced Franz Planer, which in itself is a guarantee of high visual quality. Filming took place in the Mojave Desert, but the crew also shot several exteriors among Los Angeles high-rises. The cast is also an undeniable asset, featuring John Ireland and Mercedes McCambridge, who met two years earlier in the Oscar-winning drama All the King’s Men.
